Modernity meets history
Task
The client Björn Schweda wanted modern, bright and inviting sales rooms for the future of his long-established optician and acoustics specialist shop. However, these were to harmonise with the historic town centre and the exterior design of the listed building.
The specialist shop is located in the northern part of the old town centre of the small Bavarian town of Nördlingen, which is surrounded by a well-preserved medieval town wall with towers and a covered walkway. In the course of these remodelling measures, HEIKAUS also wanted to expand the sales area.
In future, customers should feel invited into the new, bright, modern and cosy business premises, which should reflect the quality of the products and the expertise of the team.
Challenge
The dismantling of the old shop fixtures and fittings revealed the expected challenges of such an old building. ‘Crooked’ walls and ceilings required particularly detailed planning and customisation of the new interior. In particular, however, the demanding fire protection measures had to be repeatedly incorporated into the design and planning of the new shop design by the HEIKAUS Architecture planning team.
Within a construction period of just 4 weeks, the entire sales area had to be dismantled and the new fixtures and fittings installed. In addition, the façade was completely refurbished, including the windows, in keeping with the historic architecture of Nördlingen’s old town centre.
Solution
On 96 square metres, customers will find a completely new look for the Schweda Sehen- und Hören specialist shop.
Even the exterior of the shop promises a fusion of history and modernity. Ancient yet elegant and clear – the old/new façade, with modern company lettering in classic brushstrokes, focusses the gaze of passers-by.
Upon entering the new premises, the optician’s broad target group, from young to old, feels welcome. The ambience reflects the mid to upper price level of the products 1:1. The colour concept is based on natural oak, dove blue and off-white. The colours and materials are used skilfully. The combination of colours and shapes both breaks with and unites history and modernity. The herringbone flooring in a light oak look is striking and of high quality. Combined with classic-looking wall cassettes for the presentation of glasses in the wall area and pillar-like interior presentations, this creates a sublime and elegant feeling of space.
The use of natural oak wood gives the room a certain down-to-earth feel, while the meeting tables in a simple country house style create a link to the Bavarian, rural surroundings. While the simple consultation areas, with modern, brightly upholstered chairs, are located at the front of the location, the checkout area and the hearing acoustics room are located at the rear. The cash desk area was elaborately crafted from high-quality solid oak mouldings, which also gives this area its special design and effect.

The pharmacy in Albstadt focuses on openness and a feel-good atmosphere
Warm colours, ochre tones and wooden elements create a modern and appealing “somewhat different” pharmacy.
Task
The Untere Apotheke pharmacy in Albstadt was faced with the task of redesigning its premises to create a modern and inviting environment. The requirement was to set up three HV counters with additional seating advice, create an open free-choice area with a waiting zone and dispense with conventional shelving. In addition, a room for personal counselling and treatment in a quiet atmosphere was to be integrated.
Challenge
The challenge was to create an open, clear and friendly shop unit that met the requirements of modern pharmacy design. It was particularly challenging to realise the concept without conventional shelving, instead using large screens for visual selection behind the checkout. It was also necessary to integrate a central waiting area in front of the checkouts that is clearly visible and accessible, as well as to find a balance between openness and privacy.
Solution
The Lower Pharmacy presents itself as an inviting, open shop unit with a friendly interplay of colours. As you enter, you are immediately greeted by a tiled zoning area with central furniture for product presentation and a cosy waiting area. All areas are clearly laid out and open-plan. The waiting area was positioned in the centre and clearly visible in front of the checkouts, both for customers and pharmacists. The clamped wooden frame, which separates the checkout areas, promotes this openness and at the same time conveys a feeling of privacy. Large windows also provide natural light and support the bright concept as well as the bright ochre tones, which together with other earth tones and wood form the base colour.

Dr Dr Flörke presents his new practice premises in Hamburg
Surrounded by lightness, transparency and modernity, Dr Dr Christian Flörke opens the MKG Dorotheenstraße in Hamburg.
Task
The task was to plan and design new practice premises on a generous 285 square metres at Dorotheenstraße 48 in Hamburg. A newly established specialist practice for oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as plastic and aesthetic surgery in the heart of Winterhude. In the new, modern practice rooms, patients are offered complex diagnostics and treatment of complex diseases. This expertise should be reflected in the design of the practice. Dr Christian Flörke wanted a unique feeling of space that would clearly stand out from the competition and in which patients could sit back and relax.
Challenge
Between October 2023 and January 2024, completely new practice rooms had to be created. Completely new installations of the practice-specific supply lines and extensive fire protection refurbishment were necessary. The latter required a division of the construction site, which led to separate handover dates – mid-January and the end of February 2024. A special coordination task for the entire HEIKAUS team. In addition, material deliveries and waste disposal were made extremely difficult by a lift that was far too small.
The concept and dental planning was in the hands of van der Ven-Dental GmbH & Co. KG. The entire design concept, including material definition, sampling and implementation planning, was developed on this basis by HEIKAUS Architektur.
Solution
As soon as they enter the new premises, patients experience the light and open loft character – with a unique and unmistakable ambience. The spacious entrance area creates an impressive “aha effect” at first glance. A counter, reminiscent of the reception area of an exclusive hotel, creates an immediate sense of well-being.
Modernity combined with a special cosiness. This is ensured, among other things, by the continuous, light-coloured wood-look flooring.
The practice has a special charm thanks to the bright, high-ceilinged rooms and the simple lightness of the interior design. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, subtle natural colours, high-quality materials and pleasantly warm lighting create this special ambience. Despite the room height and predominantly smooth surfaces, the pleasant acoustics of the rooms are immediately noticeable. This is ensured by selected acoustic ceilings and special soundproof doors.
Exclusive designer wallpapers are used as eye-catchers in selected areas. Floor-to-ceiling factory-style sliding elements provide a view into and through the spacious waiting area and give the rooms this unique loft character. The waiting area was designed in softly tinted colours, accentuated by an anthracite tone, which is tastefully reflected in some of the furniture and elements of the practice rooms. Modern, cosy armchairs with a pleasant woollen feel invite you to linger and relax. A service point is available for refreshments, where those waiting can help themselves. A harmonious overall result in which everyone can really feel at ease.

Pletzsch in Frankfurt
Jewellery and watches majestically presented.
Task
The exclusive jeweller Pletzsch is located in the Hessian city, on one of the most famous and luxurious shopping streets in Germany, the Frankfurt Zeil. The traditional store is considered the first address for wedding rings, jewellery, diamonds and watches. The 120 square metre shop with a master workshop was to be completely renovated and given a whole new splendour in the future. Away from the dark, heavy furniture and oppressive textured wallpaper. The new design concept was to embody exclusivity, brilliance and lightness, create discreet consultation areas and give the space a new sense of width and spaciousness.
The challenge
In a period of just eight weeks, the entire interior furnishings of the exclusive jeweller’s, as well as the flooring and ceiling structures, had to be dismantled. An enormous challenge at the city’s top address. Neighbouring shops and customers were to experience as little disruption as possible during the construction work. Both the demolition work and disposal as well as the delivery and all the necessary trades such as floor layers, dry construction, electricians, painters and shop fitters had to be carried out cleanly and discreetly.
The new interior design concept was intended to appeal to both regular customers and the younger clientele. The layout and placement of the fine jewellery and high-quality watches should invite customers to stroll around and linger in the 120 m² sales area. In addition, all safety aspects of the product presentation had to be skilfully incorporated into the design concept.
Solution
Customers enter a bright and inviting shop. The bright, natural colours and materials have a majestic effect. Wall elements and centre room furniture in a white marble look harmonise with warm wood tones – tastefully combined with brass-framed mirrors, display cabinets and wall segments. The 120 square metre room is made particularly spacious by the high-quality wood-effect flooring laid in a herringbone pattern. The light and airy space is reminiscent of an elegant ballroom in a palace, which is deliberately emphasised by heavy velvet curtains. Privacy and discreet consultation areas are created by elevated, floating jewellery showcases with ceiling connections and fluffy carpet islands that are formally reflected in the ceiling design. The high-quality jewellery is presented exclusively on recessed leather surfaces in the showcase floors and the consultation tables. Last but not least, the discreet lighting concept with its impressive brilliance impresses the customers of the jeweller Pletzsch in Frankfurt.

Mode Küng in Solothurn
Special style at a new location.
Task
Looking to the future.
Mode Küng has been one of the leading menswear and womenswear retailers in the Solothurn region for many years. In 2023, the three locations were to be merged into one. A historic building at Gurzelngasse 21, on three floors. A store was to be created there that would welcome customers in an appealing and unusual shop design and invite them to explore and discover.
Challenge
Professionalism, team spirit and creativity.
Within a 3-month extension and conversion period, 400 square metres of retail space was to be created on 3 floors. The historic building is located directly in the centre of Solothurn. HEIKAUS AG was responsible for project management, including the necessary building applications and all interior work such as painting, drywall construction, floor laying, lighting and electrical installation, sanitary work, shop fitting and façade design, including a new advertising system. A challenging and demanding old building structure with special structural requirements, particularly in terms of fire protection, which had to be redesigned to meet the new requirements. In addition, there was rolling planning and co-operation with companies provided by the client. The conversion of this old building required close teamwork, a wealth of ideas and a great deal of flexibility on the part of all those involved, as the existing building turned out to be “very special” in terms of the building permit.
Solution
Mode Küng invites you in.
The merger of the three locations opens up completely new possibilities for the fashion house. Not only the optimised and central location, but also premises that enable completely individual presentation and theme levels.
Customers are welcomed on the ground floor in a directly inviting and impressive manner. There is no pressure to sell – simply the atmosphere and ambience invite customers to discover the new Mode Küng store. The versatility of the shop design is presented in an appealing and versatile way over three floors.
The design idea: an industrialised living room for shopping. In the implementation, natural materials, harmonious colour combinations and real plants meet the colour black, which discreetly characterises the overall concept. Black steel columns and beams lend the sales area on the ground floor special load-bearing capacity, both statically and in terms of design. From there, an open steel staircase, again in black, leads customers to the upper floor. They pass formwork boards made of maritime pine, a rock-like black wall that extends through all three floors and floral wall motifs such as planters. The product displays are a mix of industrial style, shabby and retro. As a result, each floor has its own special highlights. Leather trainers in the men’s shoe area, old school chairs mounted on the wall and used as merchandise displays for women’s fashion, or upcycled shelves with ornamental mouldings converted into a checkout counter. The ceiling design leaves cables and pipes visible – but in clean and stylish white, which emphasises the design concept in an original and consistent way. A shopping and design experience!

Die Brille in Villingen-Schwenningen
Modern and cosy shopping experience.
Task
Big change.
Following an extensive façade and shop window renovation at the beginning of 2023, a new shopping flair was now also to be introduced to the interior of the optician’s shop. Consultation areas with privacy, well-utilised daylight, more cosiness, separate examination areas, more feel-good flair and originality – that was the checklist.
Challenge
In a nutshell.
After a very condensed remodelling period of just 3 weeks, “Die Brille x Eye Fashion VS” was to reopen in a completely new ambience. “Die Brille” wanted to be more than just a modern optician offering expert advice. In future, the shop was to welcome customers in a very special and individualised space that would make them feel at home and want to linger. To achieve this, large sections of the existing interior were dismantled in order to redesign the entire colour and material concept. A customised lighting concept was created, the adjoining rooms were redesigned and the flooring was completely replaced. Contractors were involved in all the work, which required optimal communication and project management by HEIKAUS GmbH.
Solution
Surprisingly different – unique.
The new shop is almost unrecognisable. The previous, very pure and bright ambience, with striking wood decors in the interior, has been completely transformed. The centre of the shop is an inviting, warm lounge. A space to linger in! Light-coloured stone-look flooring is made soft and cosy by the bold combination with long-pile carpets in lilac and bright yellow. On top – colour-coordinated consultation tables in purple, cream and brown. Very simple and monumental. The room design is particularly lively and dynamic thanks to the appealing colour combinations with orange and grey consultation chairs and a comfortable, large feel-good sofa in purple. The staggered ceiling design creates a multi-dimensionality that provides an ideal stage for the colourful, long and woolly wall curtains. The wall displays are brilliantly illuminated and appear to float in front of the long curtain walls. Special eye-catchers are large product displays that also serve as room dividers and create a pleasant segmentation of the consultation areas. People like to be advised here!

Acura in Weil am Rhein
Dental practice with feel-good flair.
The modern care centre of Acura Zahnärzte GmbH in Weil am Rhein opened on 1 August 2023. The attractive group practice was built over two floors in the “Einkauf Insel” on Hauptstraße. Patients are treated by Christiane Morlock, Thomas Bannert and the team with state-of-the-art equipment in an area of approx. 350 square metres – and in a special ambience.
Task
On the 4th floor of the shopping centre, a state-of-the-art dental community centre was to be created in the former premises of the local editorial office of the Badische Zeitung newspaper. A special design statement was to be made. A dental practice that is both friendly and bright and radiates an individual cosiness. Patients should feel comfortable on the premises and spend time in a pleasant atmosphere. With these ideas in mind, the architects at van der Ven laid the foundations for HEIKAUS and the interior fit-out of the dental practice.
Challenge
In a remodelling period of 17 weeks, the existing structural conditions and room layouts had to be completely redesigned and implemented in line with the new requirements. This was a particular challenge for the electrical and plumbing trades. In addition to 7 examination rooms with modern treatment units, an X-ray area and an in-house laboratory, in which the team produces models and dental splints, were also created on the 350 square metres. The electricity and water installations in and to the respective areas are correspondingly sophisticated and customised.
Solution
A dental practice with feel-good flair. – Patients find rooms that are only slightly reminiscent of practice rooms. Cosy Amtico flooring in a wood look harmonises perfectly with the free-standing counter in the entrance area. Contrast and accents are provided by anthracite-coloured metal pendant lights, segments in the counter area and the window frames in the interior and exterior areas.
The inviting ambience continues in the waiting area. Here, patients can relax and wait for their treatment in comfortable swivel armchairs upholstered in pastel-coloured woollen fabrics. Cosy carpet islands with small side tables make for a particularly cosy and relaxing waiting time.
Beautiful, large-format photo wallpapers with a view of the Rhine create a feeling of vastness and naturalness.
A successful overall setting. The practice rooms are extremely open, spacious and flooded with light. This is ensured in particular by large, floor-to-ceiling glass elements in an industrial style that act as transparent room dividers.
Patients and staff have the feeling of being in a tastefully furnished loft – and not in a dental practice.
The discreet recessed spotlights in the high, white ceilings provide brilliant general lighting. This is complemented by the atmospheric pendant lights, also in factory style. The expressive paintings by Gabriele Moll add a finishing touch of colour. These are displayed in a gallery-like manner on the spacious white wall segments.

For the discerning customer.
Task
The prestigious but ageing clubhouse was not only to be given a contemporary and appealing design in future, but was also to be presented in an extremely high-quality, inviting and unique way. The new ambience should not only inspire club members and guests, but also offer tasteful and functional space for family celebrations, parties and restaurant customers. The investment in exclusive interior design was to be unrivalled and emphasise and highlight the special, high standards of the company’s own service and products. The aim was to deliver modernity and style of the highest quality across 1,300 m². As general contractor, HEIKAUS GmbH implemented the designs of the Herzog Kassel + Partner architecture firm over a conversion period from November 2021 to May 2022.
Challenge
In addition to the tight schedule and the very high quality requirements, the scope of the trades, which had to be precisely planned and coordinated, posed particular challenges. The execution work began even before the execution planning had been finalised in order to meet the required deadline.
Solution
The structural work such as demolition, extensive earthworks, construction of the shell, necessary sealing work and carpentry work were closely interlinked. Parallel to the start of the interior work, such as screed, tiling, sanitary and drywall work, which had to meet the sound insulation and fire protection requirements, the exterior design and the new construction of the spacious terrace covering also began.
Carpenters, painters, acoustic and fire protection builders were used to finish and realise the prestigious interior design. Floor layers processed the high-quality wood and textile coverings and a team of electricians implemented the extensive safety and lighting concept, among other things. The special materials and elaborate processing methods were demanding and anything but standard. Special features such as the high-quality marble counter in the bar area with rounded corners, elaborate and long continuous acoustic ceilings with real wood decor and decorative grooves as well as tasteful ethanol fireplaces clad in natural stone and integrated into furniture and sophisticated metal and wood decors were both a challenge and a pleasure.
A demanding and outstanding achievement for the entire HEIKAUS team in all trades.

Pharmacy in Weil am Rhein
A fusion of clarity and mediterranean design elements.
Task
The new Dreiländereckgalerie shopping centre in Weil am Rhein opened in mid-September 2022. After a 3-year construction period, a shopping centre was built over 7 floors. The retail offering includes the Dreiländereck pharmacy of the same name. The aim was to create an appealing and inviting retail space covering 230 square metres that combines health, wellness and a shopping experience for customers.
The challenge
A shopping centre of this size places special demands on the construction logistics of the interior fit-out companies. Material requirements, time constraints, complex registration and communication channels and yet a “just in time” opening must be mastered and adhered to.
The design objective was to create a pharmacy in a non-traditional style. The Dreiländereck Apotheke was to become THE feel-good pharmacy in Weil am Rhein.
The wide range of classic medicines, natural remedies and high-quality cosmetics was to be presented in an organised, clear and well-structured way with a special feel-good atmosphere. Every customer group was to feel visually addressed as well as competently looked after and advised.
Solution
Expertise paired with ambience – this is the visual and functional implementation of the certified Dreiländereckapotheke pharmacy in Weil am Rhein. Customers can expect a fusion of clarity and Mediterranean-style colour, material and design elements. Light natural tones blend seamlessly with the curves of the customer counters, the imposing shop window elements and the product displays in the interior. Metallic accents, incorporated into an exclusive customer hand basin, the large wall lettering, the plinth elements of the centre display units and the counters lend the ambience a unique and striking exclusivity.
There are round arches in the wall panels, in which the beauty products in particular are brilliantly showcased. The accentuating lighting creates an impressive three-dimensionality and depth of the product walls.
The chosen fonts, which lead to the themed areas, blend in perfectly with the high-quality shop design in terms of both colour and appearance. Another special feature is a separate consultation room for customers. Here, competent staff can discreetly advise customers in a pleasant and private atmosphere.

ADAC in Pforzheim
Dependance shines in new splendour.
Task
The existing ADAC Pforzheim branch had to be redesigned on 320 square metres. The aim was to create an appealing and attractive contact point for travellers. A place where travellers can go to research nearby or distant destinations, obtain information and linger.
In future, customers travelling by car should feel invited in a particularly appealing way to have the opportunity to browse through travel guides and maps, discover travel accessories and find out about various insurance offers in a bright and appealing ambience.
Challenge
Customers and travellers now get a lot of information online. The aim should therefore be to attract members and those who will become members to the ADAC branch for a personal meeting and individual advice – to arouse special interest. Visual incentives should be created that can only be experienced on site. A personalised service should be offered that is not available on the Internet or in travel forums. Nevertheless, great importance is attached to the recognition of the ADAC branch – ideally to be focussed on and recognised as such from a distance.
Solution
The solution is to create transparency, naturalness, light and a feel-good atmosphere. Moving the striking yellow entrance to the front of the building, monumentally embedded in a huge glass façade, creates an inviting forte for travellers.
An impressive eye-catcher, both inside and out, is a 7 metre long, floor-to-ceiling green wall. The interior is harmonious and uncluttered. The combination of natural greenery, light oak, grey textile flooring and clean white furniture creates a unique and special cosiness. Visitors can quickly find the topics that interest them thanks to the relaxed yet clear room structure. Large table islands with colourful pouffes invite you to browse through various travel guides. Customers will find the travel, information and membership counters “simply straight ahead”, with 4 counselling stations. The administration and office management areas have not been partitioned off, but are connected to the visitor-friendly sales area by a glass wall. A pleasant solution for customers and employees alike. Since the end of September 2022, the Pforzheim branch has awakened a new and pure desire to travel.
